Message from the Representative
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Seiya Hamamoto,
representative of “WAEN,” a kimono‑remake brand, as well as of “Hapure Co., Ltd.,” a long‑established beauty salon and rental‑kimono business based in Tottori Prefecture.
Since our founding in 1931 (Shōwa 6), our company has been supported warmly by the local community, continuing our work across three generations.
Why, then, did we launch a new brand, “WAEN”?
Along with my greeting, I would like to share the story and the heartfelt intentions behind the creation of this brand.
Our Feelings Toward Kimono
Having grown up surrounded by beauty work and traditional garments, I have always felt a deep affection for kimono. Seeing unused kimono—or those with stains, moth damage, or other flaws that make them unsuitable as rental pieces—simply thrown away has long felt wasteful to me.
On top of that, I could never bring myself to dispose of the rental kimono that had been carefully maintained since my grandmother’s generation. Even when taking them to buyers, the purchase price was disappointingly low, and I felt a strong desire to find a better solution to this reality.
The Beginning
Around that time, a friend in the United States said to me, “Many of my friends love kimono, but they can’t wear them as they are. Why not try making something new from them?” His words became a major turning point.
With that encouragement, I felt a strong desire to remake the kimono we had cherished for generations and bring them back into people’s everyday lives as new, meaningful items. This led me to decide to create a brand dedicated to thoughtful, high‑quality remaking.
I then began collaborating with a local designer, Morita, and together we started developing products. From there, the concept of the brand gradually took shape.
And so, with the wish to “share the unique beauty that only kimono can express with people living today,” I named the brand WAEN — 和縁, meaning “to connect people through the ties of kimono,” and launched it in 2018.
To Everyone Through WAEN
WAEN is a remake brand.
But our mission is not only to reuse fabrics and create beautiful products.
-
It is also for those who have long been interested in kimono or traditional Japanese motifs, yet felt a quiet hesitation toward wearing them.
-
For those who wished to try kimono but gave up because they could not dress themselves alone.
-
For those who want to keep the precious memories sleeping in their drawers closer to their everyday lives.
We continue our work so that WAEN can become a meaningful presence for all such people.
